Scharnhorst Kreigsmarine-Trumpter-1/200-Operation Paderborn

Featured Replies

Time to resurrect this build now the Mk-24 is complete going to be photo heavy guys and using an outside server for pics since they are stored there in order methinks should be.๐Ÿ‘

The START of some AM๐Ÿ™ƒ

scharnhorst 004.JPG

The porthole were all drilled and exterior ladders installed these were 1/350 for IJN in that scale measure 24" across 18" in 1/200 and KM were narrow by pics.

scharnhorst 001.JPG

scharnhorst 003.JPG

Starting to add some PE to the SS.

scharnhorst 001.JPG

You can see some railing being added to front of the SS at this point PE evaporated from Chikuma and I am now making them out of .015". brass wire tweezers narrowed to correct with bent and cut looks better being round over flat

scharnhorst 003.JPGE

More PE and binoculars these are 3D print now the build price/quality starts going up I am now will over $1K on the build.I have invested heavily in 3D from this point out I still used some Veteran Models stuff a mix of resin/PE small tiny and time consuming.

scharnhorst 002.JPG

This needed modification for Operation Paderborn I believe a directory for the forward guns

scharnhorst 001.JPG

Some paint being laid now RLM66 this is the observation deck/lookout my one major flaw in the build this is the Gneisenau design why Trumpter did not make that one piece to fix the ship to fix it if it failed was to much of a loss at this point so she stayed.

scharnhorst 003.JPG

I should of studied just a tad more I am not the only a French builder did a beautiful build which inspired me he just did catch the mistake

scharnhorst 001.JPG

SS coming together I think these are the Veteran Models guns they got replaced later down the line with Bunker Studios.

More I said alot ๐Ÿซ

I made all the mast myself out of brass tubing for the rigging that would happen later the flag bearer rods coming out horizontally from the bridge also with little slip rings from larger brass in place,The book does alot of drawings in 1/200 just for this ship I have the kit/book for the Bismarck.๐Ÿ˜‰

scharnhorst 006.JPG

Operation Paderborn's colors a homemade brew.

scharnhorst 001.JPG

I do not remember the exact number of parts but it was 15/18 like just for that searchlight and I had to do three now these are Veteran Models highly recommend. She look'in good.๐Ÿ˜€

scharnhorst 004.JPG

scharnhorst 005.JPG

These did not even exist in the kit and are not finished looking at the pics their was 2/3 different 40MM Flakvierling used at different locations seats changed and their position within the gun Bunker Studios came to rescue having each type in a beautiful delicate rendering.Recommend!!

scharnhorst 001.JPG

I simulated the canvas covering with tissue paper and glue.ladders will be added later wrong gun mount at this point...replaced.

scharnhorst 003.JPG

The funnel starts to come together you can see brass tubing being added and more ladders๐Ÿคจ

scharnhorst 001.JPG

scharnhorst 003.JPG

The 20MM actually have baskets with holes in them to catch spent shells Bunker Studios.Very Nice but fragile had to buy more than needed.

scharnhorst 004.JPG

Things are being built as modular nothing even as of today SS,Funnel or rear SS are glued to the deck only when all the rigging is complete.

Last installment for tonight

The boats .015" brass some canvas coverings happen later.

scharnhorst 001.JPG

scharnhorst 002.JPG

scharnhorst 001.JPG

I think I later replaced that cover just a test.

scharnhorst 002.JPG

This part of the build seemed interesting as memory serves me getting it right.

I searched high/low for these rafts to get the right scale Trumpters were way to big I ordered another company while advertising as 1/200 were closer to 1/350 you see the book gave you the dimensions and these fit the bill.

scharnhorst 003.JPG

It really takes dedication to start such a massive project. Very nice result so far๐Ÿ‘

It does to a degree FA but you start to look at sub-assemblies as a model to itself. The next installment will be new works rigging the rear SS.๐Ÿ˜‰

So much beautiful work! The SKC/33 10.5cm AA mount has always been one of my favorite naval mounts because it looks so unusual.

Interesting.... I've never seen one without the shield.

I wasn't trying to correct you. I was just saying I'd never seen one. Woulda been cool to see.

Did not take it that way Gary your good. ๐Ÿ˜‰

great build so far and some cool historical / reference information and photos

i am 'reasonably' competent and model both 1/35 armour and 1/32 air, but have not done a ship / boat since i was about 11 years old.

i think the thing that puts me off is not the rigging (although i don't 'like' rigging, i think i can do it), but photo-etch railings! gluing something with a mating surface only 2 or 3 atoms wide fills me with horror!

maybe i'll ask in the 3DP section here, but why there has not been anyone making 3DP railing sections in 1/350 or 1/200 is beyond me - they would be SOOO easy to instal compared to PE... this is all the more surprising given how many 3DP small and medium AA guns there are for ships (no more misshapen cast resin, and no PE requiring brain surgery levels of hand steadiness!)

anyway, thanks for sharing the build and looking forward to more

Nick

Nick

I have never even considered that Nick? but one would have to have a kit in hand measurements exact on each piece that will require railing then you get into which year/fitting are you doing? then the curved angle around the outside deck...........PE methinks.๐Ÿค”

I had some small repairs to be made only vaguely remember an incident and poorly at that. The railing around a gun was damaged beyond use so took outside railing and converted it.The outside railing carried a pole every 6-8' feet inside was 1/2 of that. The railing around the Flakerling needed the canvas covering trying something Plasmo did on a 1/350 scale clear glue we use for transparency on aircraft one can see works well application is the issue right ATTM toothpick tonight kinda big rectangles. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Had to add the two uprights in the middle and touch the railing from the L to the center section railing.I truly do not think any Joe would ever notice but I wanted it as close as possible to the other side.๐Ÿ˜‰

scharnhorst 001.JPG

Just paint with a white and a touch of light grey and wala.

scharnhorst 003.JPG

Looks good from the inside.

scharnhorst 004.JPG

Looks great, Kevin. I've never been a fan of railings, either. I really hate it when I bend it and it gets a rumpled appearance. And that is a common occurrence for crow's nests and other places that require lots of rolling.

Gary I use a cheap tool from Hobby Lobby for jewelers that six different diameter barrels smaller the barrel more curve that one creates I am not a pro with it first ship but it has been helping out. Thanks for poking your head in guys interest is starting to peak well now.๐Ÿ˜‰

I wish that it would just get to the point where I like it and then remain frozen in time. I have no shortage of PE tools. It's my fingers that are the problem.

Well the rear SS is about to get glued to the deck.I had to make a couple parts for the rear mast I had noticed some time ago but forgotten. The top of the mast added in 43 is the FuMB Antenna3 Ball passive detector and below it is the White top light now to paint.

I made that light atleast 6X times it was pissing me off so small classic_blink

scharnhorst 004.JPG

The boats are finally glued in place.I used the Waldron Punch to make the life rings on top.

scharnhorst 002.JPG

The rigging for the mast lots of rope lines I give myself a "D" here it was hard getting a semblance at the top of width.classic_dry

scharnhorst 003.JPG

I used Plasmo's technique of a white glue mine be Tacky Glue slightly thinned down bigger holes needed a thicker glue.classic_wink
