AJS 7R, 350cc single cylinder race bike from around 1959. So here we have a Protar model motorcycle. Founded in 1963 in Bologna by Tarquinio Provini, a famous motorcycle Grand Prix racer , they produced a wide range of motorcycle kits of the era and later branching into GP cars. Sold out to Italeri around 1970 the history gets sketchy. The original kits were multimedia featuring white metal and plastic parts. I've waited a long time for a GOOD 1/32 P-51B/C kit. Now Eduard has issued a really good one. "Margie Maru" is the subject I'll do. I've been busy removing parts from their castings and I have to say, I"m NOT a big fan of the need to cut them off the little bitty, delicate, and numerous molding "strips". Awfully tedious and requiring very careful "surgery" to keep from breaking something. For me it's a big PITA 🤪 to have to do BUT a small price to pay for the high quality of the parts.

These were started a little while back. They then got lost on my bench while I worked on whatever had my fleeting attention. So, having finished the F-16 my bench is ready to get these done. The ZM kit is much further along with the cockpit done, fuselage closed up and the majority of the wings completed as well as the engine. The Revell one has the wings started, the fuselage halves together, and the engine mostly complete.

This was a thread on the old site before the crash. So, I bought this shirt at the EAA museum in 2024, right before NATS in Madison, WI. And I've been wearing it to shows but I don't have a P-40 on the shelf. So when Sprue had a sale a while back, I bought the Great Wall Hobbies kit. Since the shirt has && on it, I've been planning on building 77. Some of the AM that I've bought for it. And some of the progress on it. Cockpit area mostly. Ready to close up the fuselage. Added

I have time now, but any physical start won't be 'til the P-40 is finished sometime after NATS. I pulled the kit from the stash several months ago, with plans to start it after the P-40. I purchased the conversion kit from B&B Resin back when Tim first released it. I've also picked up various AM sets but I'm not sure which ones I'll use. I had also picked up this resin base and I'm thinking about using it in the project. In spare moments, I've started painting the base.

1:32nd scale Sopwith 2F.1

Hi all,
In preparation for pre-rigging, I needed to drill rigging holes.
Also to add rigging anchors before assembly continues.
The drilled holes are either 0.2, 0.3 or 04 mm diameter dependent on they're use.
The rigging anchors fitted are the photo-etch HGW 1/32nd scale Spoke Eyelets (132129).
I've taken to using these as I wasn't prepared to keep getting GasPatch metal anchor points.
Those keep turning up with 90% of the parts blocked with metal.
I'd rather not use resin parts either as they can break under strain.
The HGW eyelets are strong enough and can be easily threaded with rigging materials.

Next up is to pre-rig what is necessary before assembly continues,

Well after a lot of dithering i have decided to re spoke the wheels. Although the spokes are more realistic in size on this kit the spokes do tend to run through each other where they cross and looking at other builds on the web even if you squint 😆 the wheels do let the builds down.
I have done this before but these are much harder to do than any others have done. I bought some resin rims off the web, these are a generic 40 spoke rim with deep flange alloy wheel design. The problem is they are not drilled which is not easy as spokes go through the rim in 4 directions ie: they protrude either left right or front back so drilling is complicated. These have been drilled 0.5mm but not opened up and counter sunk for the nipples

In order to create spoke nipples i have used electrical fittings used to add to soldered wire ends.

You will need to use the original hubs so the first thing to do is cut them away from the original wheels

i then strip them and paint them white because it makes them easier to see than the original black under the chrome

not bothered about finish at this stage as you need to drill 20 x 0.5mm holes in each side, 40 per wheel. the only help you get here is where the plastic spokes you just cut off have left a mark you can use for drilling.

Next you need to knock up jig to hold the assembled hub concentric to the rim something like this. Hubs here are semi gloss black and rims are Gloss white over sprayed with white aluminium from MRP

There are basically 4 rows of 10 spokes, here are the first 10 above

then 2 rows above

and 4 rows above. At this point you can slide the nipples down the protruding spokes and hold in place with a small drop of CA. then cut the excess spoke off as close to the rim as poss. Push each nipple right in before adding the glue

and hey presto a wheel. Front in this case

Because i was feeling my way a bit i didnt do both wheels together but now i have to do another......just glad this is not a car 😂

Took some careful sanding and dryfitting but the wings are attached. Now to smooth it all out, cut the shims to size and Rescribe.
